Teddy Bears FAQs
Where does the teddy bear get its name?
Teddy bears are known as such because they arose in response to a cartoon by Clifford Berryman about Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. The former president had gone on a hunting trip in Mississippi while in the area to settle a border dispute. During this trip he refused to shoot a captive bear, leading to a cartoon known as "Drawing The Line in Mississippi," depicting Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a cute, cuddly bear. A man named Morris Michtom created the first "Teddy's Bear" based on the cartoon. The stuffed animals became an instant craze.
What is the Steiff company?
This Germany-based plush toy company was created in 1880 by a woman named Margarete Steiff. In 1903, they began producing stuffed bears independently of the "Teddy's Bear" created in American. This design gave the company an enormous boost. Today, it is known for its high quality stuffed bears and other designs.
What was The Bear Museum?
This is the world's first Teddy Bear Museum. It was founded by a woman named Judy Sparrow in 1984 in Petersfield, Hampshire, England. As the name suggests, it housed a notable collection of antique teddy bears. Other related items were also included in its collection. It closed in 2006, although many other such museums have sprung up all over the world since its opening.
