Plush Teddy Bear
A plush teddy bear is made with a textile cut similar to the materials fustian or velvet. This means that it has a cut pile or nap. Nap is a raised fuzzy surface. Pile is a raised surface consisting of upright loops or strands of yarn.
Originally, the material of plush teddy bear designs would consist of either mohair or worsted yarn. The former comes from the long-haired Angora goat, the latter is yarn which has a notable straightness to its fibers. Silk overtook these options for plush. It would be used either by itself or with a cotton backing to produce the texture.
A plush teddy bear today will commonly be manufactured through the use of synthetic fibers. Polyester is a common choice for this. Stuffed toys which make use of this material are often referred to as "plushies." Designer toys in particular will use this material.
